On August 15th at 3:00pm, the State Library will sponsor an OPAL session on ISBN-13. The title is Are you ready for ISBN-13? In January 2007 ten digit ISBNs will be replaced by a new numbering scheme. Is your library prepared for this change? This session will explore the following: Why will agencies across the world implement a new thirteen digit numbering scheme? What will the new ISBN-13 numbers look like? Is there a conversion tool? How will the new ISBN-13 impact your patrons at the reference desk, book purchases, interlibrary loan and beyond? Join us for an introduction to ISBN-13 and its impact on libraries. The presenter is Karen Swetland. She is the Reference Coordinatory at the University of South Carolina Upstate Library. This OPAL event will be held in the Auditorium.
If you have further questions about using OPAL or about ISBN-13, please contact me at 734-8663 or via email at stetterton@statelibrary.sc.gov. I have recently received a couple emails about ISBN-13 issues. I am doing some research on these and will post something else soon. I hope this OPAL session will address some of your questions, though, so be sure to check it out!
